Promoting Virtual Learning & STEM Education in Nigeria Programme (PVL – STEM)

In response to the evident gap in computer training, digital skills acquisition, and STEM interest among young people in Nigeria, United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN) initiated the “Promoting Virtual Learning & STEM Education (PVL-STEM)” project.

Supported by Lenovo, this project aimed to equip over 200 in-school and out-of-school young people with essential digital skills. The successful completion of this project marks a significant stride in narrowing the digital divide.

The “PVL-STEM” project targeted young people in Lagos, Abuja, and Nasarawa States, recognizing the vital role of digital literacy and STEM education in the contemporary global landscape. With a focus on in-school and out-of-school youth, the project addressed the pressing need for digital skills in today’s society.

The project celebrated the graduation of:

  • Forty in-school young individuals from Government Junior Secondary School, Maroko, Lagos
  • 146 out-of-school youth from Dutse and Kuchingoro communities in Abuja

These graduations signify the culmination of an intensive digital literacy and soft skills training program, equipping participants for success in the digital age.

Touching the lives of 264 young individuals with the transformative “PVL-STEM” initiative, United Way Greater Nigeria not only provided intense training in digital skills but also strengthened the capacity of community-based organizations to implement similar programs.

Notably, the intervention extended to young people living in Internally Displaced Communities/Camps (IDP Camps) in New Kuchingoro and various other locations, including:

  • Dutse Community
  • Government Secondary School, Apo Community
  • Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada Community
  • Government Secondary School, Wuse 2 Community
  • Government Secondary School, Mabuchi Community
  • Government Secondary School, Gwarinpa, Life Camp

By extending its reach to diverse communities, including IDP Camps, UWGN showcased a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

The digital age demands a new set of abilities for success, and the “PVL-STEM” project by UWGN addressed this imperative need.

Beyond imparting digital skills, the initiative empowered young individuals to navigate the challenges of the modern world and fostered a sense of confidence and capability. The project not only closed the digital skills gap but also laid the foundation for sustainable community development through digital literacy.
